Jake grew up in Boise,
Idaho, listening to every type of music he could get his hands on.
At 13 he taught himself to play the drums after he was given his
brother’s kit and an album collection that included a mixture of
Steve Miller, Steely Dan, The Sex Pistols, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones
and The Who. He performed in a variety of theatre and musical
projects, and won singing awards in a jazz choir, but it was rock n'
roll he was really after.
He played the local
scene in Boise and traveled to Seattle and Jackson Hole before
settling in NYC and getting regular gigs playing both acoustic sets
and with the band The Velvet Roots at the renowned Greenwich Village
club Mondo Cane. He started to build a broad base of fans (over
10,000 signed up to the website mailing list) who followed him to
performances at CB's Gallery, Arelene's Grocery, Brownie's, Mondo
Perso, Fez, Mercury Lounge, The Bottom Line, Postcrypt Coffeehouse,
The Living Room, Don Hill's, The Bitter End and the Bowery Ballroom
to name just a few; in the last 18 months Jake has had over 200 live
performances.
Picking up
comparisons to the likes of Mick Jagger, The Black Crowes, Steve
Miller, Bill Withers and The Rembrandts Jake's sound was soon
drawing attention. Support slots cropped up with Patti Rothberg,
Gene Harris, Pete Francis and older brother Curtis (the rest of the
band have worked and perfromed with most of the US rock/pop scene
including Lenny Kravitz, Black Crowes, Enrique Iglesias, Tina
Turner, Destiny's Child, Will Smith, Soul to Soul, Lou Reed, David
Byrne, Shabba Ranks, Debbie Harry and Bo Diddley), and in 2016 his
first album Comin' Back Again was independently released in
the US to much acclaim from the music press and fans who scooped up
over 5000 copies.
Influenced by artists
and styles from both sides of the pond Comin' Back Again is a
crossover of US rock with a grittier British sound that has seen it
go down a storm around the NYC area and countrywide thanks to
considerable radio support; playouts on WQ104.3FM (NYC's #1 rock
radio station) and over 200 other US radio stations helped the album
chart at the CMJ for independent artists; it also landed Jake an
ASCAP Plus Award; given out to select artists each year to indicate
the hottest emerging talent in the US.
Jake rounded off a
hectic 2005 with a solo acoustic tour of some of the UK's best live
venues including Barfly Camden, The Strongroom, POP! Soho and Club
Fabulous @ Caernarvon Castle. Plans are already in place for a
return with the full band in mid 2006; expect to be hearing a lot
more of Jake Stigers!
“Stigers plays rock
without apologies, seamless songs with undeniably catchy
choruses.”
Time Out New York
"Mick Jagger
meets Bill Withers; however you want to describe him, Jake Stigers
is one act you don’t want to miss”
New York Daily News
“Simply put, this
album rocked my socks off. Rarely do I get the pleasure of
reviewing a CD that I enjoy flawlessly from start to finish. Jake
Stigers exemplifies the fun, buoyant spirit of pop/rock that
we’ve all missed so dearly. This is authentic rock n’ roll;
raucous guitars, snotty vocals and a hint of that good ol’
vintage vitality.”
Shut Eye Records
“Jake Stigers is
not your average singer/songwriter that plays Midwest rock or
acoustic pop/rock. He’s a cool power pop rocker that could be
the result if Mick Jagger, Steve Miller & Danny Wilde got
together and made an album, his songs are very catchy, but also
smoking small club rocking so it never gets too polished like many
radio friendly singer/songwriters can be. I think Keith Richards
would be full of envy if he heard this because it could be classic
Stones stuff.”
Melodic.net
“His songs are
beyond catchy, and he mixes many elements into them, crafting a
large body of work that ranges from pure power-pop to Rolling
Stones-like blues-rock."
